Misleading: Video shows England fans in 2018, not Canadians watching 2024 Copa América
A 20-second video showing a huge crowd of spectators erupting in cheers was posted on X on July 5.
The post claimed they were supporters of the Canadian football team celebrating a goal. “What a scene at English Bay in Vancouver after that final penalty goal!” it said.
The tweet has more than 10,000 likes and 1,000 reposts.
Canada defeated Venezuela in a quarterfinal match at Copa América in Texas on July 5 after Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out.
Canada-based online media outlets, such as DansLesCoulisses and Now Toronto, also shared the tweet in their reports on the game.
Some users who replied to the tweet seemed to believe the video was related to the Canadian national team’s recent victory. “That’s an amazing crowd. Go Canada go!” said one. Another wrote: “That is awesome. Canadian Proud we all are. Way to go.”
However, the claim is misleading. The video, in fact, shows joyful England fans in London reacting to their team’s first goal in the 2018 World Cup semifinals.
Upon closer inspection, Annie Lab spotted people wearing jerseys and flags that belong to the England national team.
A reverse image search found a longer video tweeted by Fox Sports on July 11, 2018. The one-minute video is captioned: “London, how we feeling after that Trippier goal?” alongside the hashtag #CROENG.
The Telegraph, a British newspaper, published similar footage showing the same moment on its YouTube channel on the same day.
The video report said: “30,000 fans in London’s Hyde Park celebrate England’s first goal in the World Cup semi-final against Croatia.”
In the 2018 World Cup semifinal in Moscow, England lost 2-1 to Croatia despite taking the early lead through Kieran Trippier’s free kick.
